Things I don't understand
I've been living in this country for some time now and I love it. But I must say there are still so many things that perplex me, particularly when driving around:
* Cars that have foreign (usually American) license tags. These are either displayed in the rear view window (not so bad) or have actually replaced the real ones (bad). Why? Does it earn the owner brownie points because they've been to the states? I suppose related to this are those stickers that have a country's initials (D - Deutchland, EU - European Union). I've yet to come across one with RP on it.
* Really lame displays of authority. For instance, security guards have these metal detectors that seemingly beep at random (absence of metal notwithstanding). Neighbourhood traffic enforcers all have whistles and large IDs (these are usually turned wrong way round so you can't really tell if they've just hung their library cards on their neck). Baranggay 'tanods' walk around in photographer's vests (don't forget the cap!). And why so many different kinds of traffic enforcers? Oh. And cars that have IDs on the rearview mirrors with 'Media', DOTC or some other acronym emblazoned on them. Are these meant to ward off 'evil' spirits?
* Cars that have had their lights re-wired. Reverse lights (the white ones) turn on when they step on the break. Turn signals (yellow) are constantly on. Is this some sort of artistic expression?
Not transport related:
* Why are ostensibly government projects inscribed with names of the mayor or congressman? Did they personally pay for it? Its not so bad if there's a sign that proclaims 'this is a project of so and so' what's bad if the name is actually part of the structure.
* Why are there scantily clad dancers gyrating on noontime t.v.? More to the point: why do es it seem that many women think this is ok? I've seen kids imitating these dancers to the delight of their parents!
Am I missing something here?
